Restate Main Thesis: Athletes endure social pressures
which encourage them to cheat and use performance-enhancing drugs. In the past
forms of cheating were performance suppression and herbal medicines. Today
athletes use performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids and in the future
they may use cybernetics to get ahead of other competitors.
Restate Support Thesis:
The social pressures
endured by athletes of the modern era influence them to use
performance-enhancing drugs to get ahead of competitors and achieve eternal
glory in the eyes of the public.
Restate Support Thesis:
Cheating in sports
has been around since sports have begun. There have been many forms in sports
history. The earliest forms of cheating were performance suppression and herbal
drugs. Today concoctions of drugs are injected into athletes to increase
naturally made hormones to increase athletic ability. In the future through the
advancements in technology athletes can exploit the opportunity to use cybernetics
to increase escalate skill level.
Outside Connection: In Game of Shadows the writers illustrate how Barry wished to achieve
greatness and be the best of the best. However, Bonds’ natural ability did not
give him the opportunity to do so. The drugs used by Bond’s were advancements
in previous drugs used in the early 1900’s helped Bonds’ achieve the accolades
he achieved.
Thought Provoking End: Athletes have always been looking for the edge over
their competitors. The use of drugs gives an easy way to gain that edge. In an
era where sports can open so many opportunities, athletes are willing to take
the risk when they can gain so much and this phenomena is starting at an early
age. “These drugs may tempt teen athletes at a time when they are looking for a
performance edge. Some may want to play well, hoping to earn a sport
scholarship to college” (Monroe pg 9).
