Performance
Enhancing Drugs in Sports
In Game of Shadows by Mark Fainaru and Lance Williams they illustrate
how performance enhancing drugs use in sports have deemphasized work ethic and
how athletes are led to take these drugs because of social pressures.

“We had no reason to believe that anyone at the highest level was not using performance-enhancing drugs” (pg18)
This is important because it shows the mentality of the athletes on the drug. They believe that everyone else is on it so they need to also do the drug for a level playing field
“ more than 10000 young athletes were given powerful steroids, and the side effects were horrific: severe heart and liver damage- even birth defects in children born to doped athletes.”(pg19)
This statement shows how steroid use has created horrible effects on these athletes and their children. It also causes a question of why did the athletes use this even knowing the risks?
“ The systematic use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports for more than 50 years has punted performance standards clear out of sight, Francis wrote so far out of sight that no human can attain them without chemical assistance.” (pg19)
This statement is important because it shows how not only do athletes do it by themselves but coaches watch and influence athletes to use PED’s.
“most of those guys are on steroids and the best ones you can bet they are on steroids.” (pg 20)
This statement shows how people thought that in order to be the best they needed to take steroids.
“Conte had been exposed to the world of big-time sports, and he liked it. He especially appreciated hanging out with the athletes, feeling as if he had contributed to their success.” (pg 20)
This shows how Conte wanted to feel important and he sold the athletes the drugs so he could be recognized for helping them become great athletes.

Winning
at any cost talks about what steroids are, why people use them, the dangers,
and suggest a way to end the abuse of anabolic steroids. The first topic it
covers is what steroids are and the different types are and their uses. They
tell the enhancements this drug gives
you and the leagues that ban the use of anabolic steroids. The leagues are combating
the use of steroids by regulatory examinations. Another covered topic is why
people take steroids. It talks about the common misconceptions and tells the
actual side effects of use of the drug. The side effects from taking anabolic
steroids are both physical and mental. The list is very extensive and states
the different side effects by males and females. The final topic states
different ways that we can discourage anabolic steroid use by athletes. This article was very insightful on what
steroids really do to someone who is using it for personal gain.

An American is a person who has citizenship to the United States of America. An American doesn't have to be born in the United States they just have to have citizenship to America. To be an American you have to claim the United States as your country. In order to be an American you don't even have to ever have been in America as long as you claim it as your country. Americans look like anyone. An American can be good or bad. I beleive being an American is the best description of equality of the human race

The Purpose of language is to be able to communicate to other people. It gives us the ability to communicate our ideas and thoughts to other people. We read to learn. We use it to learn about discoveries by other people that lived before and live now. We also read to learn about the ideas and thoughts of people from the past and now. We write to communicate ideas. We use it to tell other people about experience and interpretations of the world and pieces of information. We also write to record information. We also write to tell stories. We tell stories which we make with our imagination and stories of our own experiences and the world. These are reasons for language, why we read and write.

Materialism

Materialism
H.L Menken believes that idealism
is the chief curse of the world and not materialism. His argument is
respectable however it is disagreeable. Materialism leads to many more problems
in life than idealism. His statement is especially disagreeable in The Great
Gatsby.
In The Great Gatsby the focus of the characters are on
materialism. Due to this lifestyle choice they live an unfulfilling life which
leads to death or being miserable. The first character who portrays the
materialistic lifestyle is Gatsby. He throws a lot of parties in order to find
purpose in his life. He tries to show off all his possessions to complete
strangers hoping that he will impress them and want to know him better. He
completely fails at this attempt. He creates a community who uses his party to
get drunk and have sex but dose not appreciate Gatsby throwing the party and
trying to befriend him. Gatsby is also constantly trying to flaunt what he has
to Daisy to make her fall in love with him. He does this when he shows her his
shirts. This is his attempt to show Daisy what she does not have and she ends
up crying. She does not fall in love with Gatsby but feels sorry for herself.
Gatsby decides to do this because he thinks Daisy loves someone for their money
since she is married to Tom. Gatsby is one materialistic character however he
is not the only character who is materialistic.
Daisy is a character in the book that is also materialistic. She is
tricked by the people around her into believing that she should not have
opinions and be a fool. When she talks about her daughter she says “And I hope
she’ll be a fool that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful
fool” (Fitzgerald 17). Daisy makes this statement hoping that her daughter will
have no opinion and be like her. Materialism has caused the women in the book
to believe that the only thing women have to offer is their looks. This trumps
any ideas they have on important subjects and further trying to better
themselves. They then have a stagnant lifestyle of pleasing their successful
husbands. Daisy is one of these people
who act this way towards Tom who acts in any way he wishes because he is rich
Tom is my final example of a materialistic character. His materialistic
beliefs cause him to be lustful and cheat on his wife with Myrtle. He does this
because he believes that the rules of marriage do not apply to him because he
is wealthy. Tom is also judgmental towards Gatsby because of his materialistic
beliefs. Tom thinks that Gatsby is a bad person even though he has not strived
to get to know Gatsby personally. Jordan says to Tom “if you’re such
a snob, why did you invite him to lunch?’ (Fitzgerald 122). This shows that Tom’s arrogance is flamboyant
to the people around him that they begin to question his decisions. All these
characters are in the end Gatsby dies, Daisy runs away and Tom kills himself.
Their lives could have been very different if they had not let their riches
consume them.
The characters in the book could have had different lives if they had
used their money to benefit the world. This could have led to happiness because
they would have felt good that they are helping the less fortunate. Their ideal
lifestyle would then have become to help others. This is how the wealthy people
in the real world live their lives.
In the real world most rich
people live fulfilling lives that help the good of the world. They are trying
to make their mark on the world and create a great legacy. They do not wish to
show off their possessions to others but show off their accomplishment which is
living idealistically and not materialistic. The people who live materialistic
are soon forgotten because the public do not know them or know them for bad
things and the human race tends to try to forget the bad things that happen in
the world. They people who live idealistically try to create a memory which
will last through many generations. This has caused the American Dream to shift
to idealism. In conclusion materialism is the chief evil while idealism is actually
good because different people have different ideals.

Drinking
in America
Earl Rochester states that Americans should be forced to take classes
and receive a license in order to drink. His idea is enlightening and is an
excellent proposition that the United
States should implement in the laws of
modern american society.
His statement is an excellent way to create responsible drinkers and
teach people the effects of their alcohol consumption. According to NBC news 75000
Americans die from alcohol each year. Also 51.5% of adults 18 years of age and
over become regular drinkers and are at risk to alcoholism according to the
CDC. These unlucky Americans die or become at risk to health problems because
they are not educated enough to know how alcohol really effects them mentally
and physically. This staggering statistic can be reduced if American’s learn
about the risks of drinking. This may enlighten people to see that they may
have a problem and help them take action on their problem. They may make better
decisions since they are informed by these classes in order to get their
drinking license.
Citizens should be able to receive their license at the age of 18. Most
people encounter the temptations of alcohol at this time because of no supervision
by adults in college. This will cause no sneaking around by college students
because they are legally able to drink in college. This temptation may be
because some people in college can drink while others can not. Lowering the age
will eliminate this problem. This requirement may reduce drunk driving and
create safer roads. People who try and buy without a license will receive
punishment.
A drinking license would control who can drink and have penalties for
abusers. They will need to show their license in order to purchase alcohol.
Punishing bars and stores who sell to unlicensed drinkers would cause the
seller to hesitate to sell to unlicensed citizens who wish to partake in
alcohol consumption because of the possible fines. People who are rejected by
sellers and reported may face fines and suspension of driver license. Repeated
offenders may face jail time. This is a way to create safer drinkers and a
safer society.
Using these steps can help create safer drinkers and a safer world. Citizens
will know the risks of their drinking decisions and think twice about their
alcoholic consumption. These consequences will help reduce tragedies caused by
alcohol. In conclusion, classes and laws holding citizens accountable for their
alcohol consumption will benefit the populous of the United States .
NIck Caraway Character Write up

Character
Write Up
In our project the character I decided to portray was Nick Caraway. Nick
is an essential character to the book because he portrays an unbiased opinion
about everyone. The traits he possesses are quiet and observant. He seems to be
a spectator to the lives of the people in the book. I hoped to portray these
characteristics when I was Nick in the video.
In the video I made some choices on how to portray the role of Nick. I
decided to be more of a listener in my role. I did this because in the book he
is the narrator and is unbiased. He bases his judgment of people base on
actions and not on what others have said about them. The thing that motivated
me in the text to do the things I did was how Nick was told of in the story. He
is a person who excellently portrays the themes of the novel.
He portrays themes of the novel and is important because he doesn’t know
anyone in the book in the beginning so he has a fresh understanding of the
characters in the book. He evaluates the personalities of the other character
based on how they show themselves and not on their history because with
everyone he has no history with them. Fitzgerald uses Nick to show how society
should be. He thinks that people in society should be like Nick. Nick doesn’t
show off his wealth and doesn’t judge people before knowing them. Fitzgerald is
saying that society is not like Nick and bases their judgments on wealth and
how they got their wealth. Nick doesn’t care about how people got their money
but on who they are. His character is shown greatly in his last name Caraway.
The author chooses this last name to further show how Nick is not judgmental.
He throws all the cares and judgments of the other people about the person he
is meeting away and bases his evaluation of this person on his own experiences.
In today’s society people are trying to be more like Nick. We try and judge
people based on who they are rather than on what they have or their social
status. Overall Nick is the person who the people in the book and in today’s
society we strive to be.
