“We had no reason to believe that anyone at the highest level was not using performance-enhancing drugs”  (pg18)

This is important because it shows the mentality of the athletes on the drug. They believe that everyone else is on it so they need to also do the drug for a level playing field

“ more than 10000 young athletes were given powerful steroids, and the side effects were horrific: severe heart and liver damage- even birth defects in children born to doped athletes.”(pg19)

This statement shows how steroid use has created horrible effects on these athletes and their children. It also causes a question of why did the athletes use this even knowing the risks?

“ The systematic use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports for more than 50 years has punted performance standards clear out of sight, Francis wrote so far out of sight that no human can attain them without chemical assistance.” (pg19)

This statement is important because it shows how not only do athletes do it by themselves but coaches watch and influence athletes to use PED’s.

“most of those guys are on steroids and the best ones you can bet they are on steroids.” (pg 20)

This statement shows how people thought that in order to be the best they needed to take steroids.

“Conte had been exposed to the world of big-time sports, and he liked it. He especially appreciated hanging out with the athletes, feeling as if he had contributed to their success.” (pg 20)

This shows how Conte wanted to feel important and he sold the athletes the drugs so he could be recognized for helping them become great athletes.
