As a middle schooler and leading into my early years of high school, I went into a phase of watching a lot of motivational videos. A lot of these videos helped me to gain an interest in focusing on what I wanted to do in life. As I watch the various number of videos the one phrase that was most memorable to me was “What is your why?” This phrase was a phrase that I pondered upon since I did not know what I wanted to do with my life till I figured out what I wanted to do with my life in my sophomore year of high school, Sport Management. In my sophomore year in high school, I knew that my dream was to be in the Sport Management field and it was all inspired by the movie Moneyball. Interestingly, the movie was about Billy Bean the general manager of the Oakland Athletics and also alumni of my high school, Mt. Carmel. Instantly, because we came from the same high school I looked up to him because we had come from the same school and I believed I could be like him. The movie was about a baseball player who had a career-ending injury early in his career who decided to use his knowledge and connections to pursue a career in the front office of the Oakland Athletics. Seeing his struggle of working with the Oakland Athletics and producing a successful team with a low budget and a failing culture by finding players that were odd but still could produce was inspiring. His experience showed me that people can be successful even if they are not in the best circumstance. In Wooden (2005) he described his practice facilities and how they were not adequate to produce a national championship team but despite that he had insufficient facilities he didn’t look for excuses he looked for solutions,“ There would be no excuses in the future, only a careless search for solutions” (p.195). Wooden doesn't give any excuses to give up, but looks for solutions. This can connect to my journey in sport as well as in life. While in college I didn’t go to the best school with the best facilities and prestigious reputation but, through hard work, determination and “ a careless search for solutions” I was able to to use the resources I did have to get to where I am today, in a prestigious graduate school. During this time I didn’t look for excuses I looked for solutions no matter how long it took this helped me discover my greatest strength, resiliency. Wooden (2005) depicts that in order to become successful you must work hard now “As a director, I would try to teach them how to give the best performance possible during the rehearsals” (p.214). Wooden is talking about that in order to get to the position that you want to be in life you must work at it now. This hard work ethic mentality has become my greatest strength. My resiliency, the willingness to wake up really early and stay up late to get work done has pushed me through my college career, this became more prominent as I had many papers where I would stay up all night and in a couple of cases stay up two days to finish the paper. It didn’t matter how tired I was or however I was feeling, I had to push my body to its limits and beyond to get things done. Looking back on it I felt it was all worth it because for those small moments of mental pain and fatigue I had a large reward of knowledge and experience (and a good grade). I continue to have this similar mindset as I am in my master’s program of willing to make a sacrifice for a greater reward spending as much time needed in order to get assignments done and look for opportunities in the field of sport. Opportunities are now in an abundance and I am looking to take advantage of these opportunities such as internships, job opportunities, and the alumni network. Tapping into these opportunities will be beneficial to my growth in the sports industry to help me understand my interests in the field, as long as I work hard. Currently, my interests are in basketball, baseball, and football and the marketing tactics of these organizations to develop marketing plans. These functions of the business interest me because they can take organizations and events and turn them from a small event to a mega-event through marketing and public relations tactics. I am looking to explore these opportunities through my current opportunities with Girls Football Association and the Los Angeles Rams. Each opportunity allows me to explore two aspects of marketing within the sports industry. With Girls Football Association I am developing schools to target and develop a marketing plan in order to inform theses schools about the opportunity of establishing girls football at their campus. This is very different from the Los Angeles Rams job where I am going to be a part of the more interactive part of marketing. I will be talking to people and informing them of the 50/50 raffle ticket program and answer any questions they have about it.  In order to be truly successful in pursuing these opportunities, I not only need to understand my reasons for pursuing my goals and strengths but also my weaknesses so I can improve upon them.
One of them is my insensitivity, usually when people come to me with their problems, especially when I am working. My drive within myself is felt by others and when I get into my zone there is nothing that will distract me which makes me ignore or become insensitive to others. This has been shown mostly with my conversations with my parents. Most times when they call, I am very focused on my work and their call in my head is a distraction and I try and make the conversation as short as possible. I can tell that my parents still want to talk to me and ask about everything that I am doing. However, I know I have things to do so I try and cut the conversation so I can get back to what I am doing. This is something that I need to improve on because in the future I will be working in teams and we constantly need to be collaborating especially in times of stressful situations to find solutions.
Looking back on all my experiences I want to answer the question “What is your why?” Through all my experiences I have found that my why is upholding a legacy and developing my own. From that moment of watching Moneyball and seeing that someone from the same high school could accomplish being a successful general manager started my journey to do the same and become like him and develop my own legacy. As I was in my junior year of high school I began to that when the moment comes when I die I want something good to be said about me. I wanted to have a life, a life that mattered and not just merely existed on the planet. This pursuit of legacy has pushed me to do things that are uncomfortable Wooden speaks upon this when he speaks upon the NCAA banning dunking in the league “Although I supported outlawing the dunk for several reasons, including that it turned into a showboating device” (p.226). This new rule was a joy to Coach Wooden, but it did not sit well with star player Lewis Alcindor. From this new rule, Alcindor had to develop other moves in his game and from this hard work and the unforeseen circumstance it helped develop an unforeseen skill the “Kareem Sky Hook”. During my life, I was able to be put into situations where I had to be uncomfortable. Once I had experienced them and overcame them I actually began to look for them. I joined an organization, I competed in marketing research competitions and I decided to apply for graduate school. All of these started as something that was uncomfortable and when they asked if I wanted to join no matter how unsure I was about the situation, I just raised my hand and signed up. That is the first step to being successful in anything, signing up. Once I had the courage to sign up I found that there was no turning back I had to complete what I had signed up for and do my best in it and put in the work. Being put in these uncomfortable situations helped me develop my “Sky Hook”. I was able to develop good social skills which helped me with gaining the courage to meet new people. Other skills that I developed was my leadership skills and this was exercised by developing and coordinating projects. My leadership and social skills were constantly tested when I had to collaborate with new people for projects and had to reach out to new organizations on and off-campus in order to coordinate an event. Some projects included various community service projects, social events and my largest project the Forget-Us-Not benefit concert. During this event, I had to include all of the skills that I learned. I had to use my social skills to collaborate with my team as well as the non-profit organization which we were working with. I also had to use my resiliency and leadership skills to coordinate and manage the event while being prepared for any snafus.  All of my uncomfortable situations helped develop my greatest skills. These skills help me to continue my journey of life and to pursue the construction of my legacy to answer my “why?”

Cohort 21S

“High School students who participate in athletics are found to possess, on average, better GPAs, have more self-confidence and demonstrate leadership abilities” (MasterAlexis,2015). Through my entire life, I have been part of organized league sports. Despite being a part of sports since my early childhood I was unable to see the benefits of sports until middle school. In middle school, my family was moved out to Italy because of my mom being stationed out there for the military. At the time of the announcement, I did not want to leave. I already had friends in San Diego and I was scared of not being able to make new ones in Italy. In the spring I decided to play baseball which is where I ended up making the most friends and eased my worries about not making any. Until that point baseball had been a sport I had never played before besides hitting tennis balls outside of my yard pretending I had hit home runs for the world series or throwing baseballs at old beat-up toy care imagining that I had made the final save of a game which when entering the season caused me to question if this was something I wanted to do. In that spring I joined Little League, I was able to pick up the sport relatively easy due to the fact that Tennis was my main sport as a kid and similar hand-eye coordination skills were utilized in both sports. The main thing was asked by other parents to mine was, How long has your son been playing?’ To their surprise, my parents would respond, “ Oh, this is his first year.” The attention I got garnered a recommendation from my Little League coach for him to suggest that I try out for the all-star team. At first, I was nervous because all the other kids had been playing at an early age and showed what I believed to be more skilled at the time. At the end of tryouts to my surprise, I made the team. After the announcement was made one of the kids had made some snarky comment,” Did you know you were one of the last ones picked?” I had no reason to believe this was untrue since his dad was one of the assistant coaches. This motivated me to prove that I had belonged on the team and I made sure that I spent time improving my skills and learning the strategies. The head coach of that team was Coach Bartley, Coach Bartley had lived in Italy for 10 years and knew all the kids very well, besides me. In the beginning, all I saw from him was the strict coach who wanted everything done perfectly. Coach Bartley became a father figure that the team needed but he knew when to compliment a player when he did a good job and make the game fun. The thing that stood out to me was the transition from their constant yelling in practice to them holding dinners after practice to build a sense of unity within the team. On the last day, before we were going to leave for the tournament we had a slip and slide ( a tarp with water running down it) to practice sliding drills. This was one of the ways to show that this was a game and it was fun but still be productive to teach how to play the game properly. The next year we had a new all-star coach, Coach Weider. He was another coach who was always trying to teach discipline but still wanted to have fun. My most distinct memory was when we had been late to practice as a team, we rushed over to try and start practice before he noticed and he played it off like it was nothing we spread out ( at the time we used our arms to evenly space out). When we put our arms out to space out our coach yelled: “ Did I tell you to put your arms down?” For the next 20 minutes, we had to keep our arms up, which seemed to be our punishment for being late. This discipline and camaraderie proved to be beneficial in the classroom as well which showed up when players would come back with grades putting them on the honor roll. This is what I believe all the good coaches of my middle and high school coaches wanted for the kids. 7.3% of high school baseball players get an NCAA Division I scholarship and from that 2% of those players become professional ( NCAA.com). With this in mind, our coaches knew the odds were against us so they always pushed our studies but still allowed us to dream that we could make it by encouraging us to work hard.
As I went to high school this kind of hard but fair leadership continued with my basketball team had the greatest impact on me. This team became a family “For a parent, the family counts most of all; for a good leader, the team is nothing less than extended family” (Wooden 2005). Wooden summarizes the experience that I had with my team perfectly. In general, living on a military base puts you in a small community. My school had 700 students in high school and this was considered a Division II school. My basketball story all begins with tryouts, I am not a particularly tall person ( 5 foot 6 in) however, I loved the game of basketball and really wanted to be on the team. The team only had 15 spots and by the end of tryouts, I was disappointed to hear that I had not made the team. One of the things that surprised me, however, is that the basketball coach ( Coach Lord) pulled me aside and told me how hard it was to cut me because he knew how hard I was working to prove I deserved to be on the team and to continue to work hard. A week later, I had heard that the basketball coach wanted to talk to me. When I went to his classroom I was confused because there was no reason for me to be there, I didn't even have a class with him. He said, “Congratulations you are on the team”. I was really confused and later found out that someone dropped to join the wrestling team. From that point on I knew I had to prove I had belonged (again). Being on a sports team made this already tight-knit community even closer. We would spend late nights together hanging out at each other's houses and everyone was accountable for the actions of each other. Specifically, this was accountability for the team was shown in practice. In an effort to prove I belonged I had been the one who messed up the most. The coach always wanted to have things done “the right way”. If we missed a layup or did the drill wrong we would have to redo it and run suicides after practice for the mistake as a team. This made everybody have to focus on their technique to get the drill right and push others to do the same. The coach pushed us to do our best and this was carried onto the seniors (the leaders of the team) and the rest of the team. This hard work and dedication to paying attention to the fundamentals ended up paying off in the end when at the end of the season we won the DODDS Division II European Championship. This experience taught me a lot but, one thing in particular and that is: It doesn't matter how much you succeed at something by but the fact that you succeded. It didn’t matter if I was the star player or a bench warmer the fact that I made it meant that I had an opportunity to contribute to the team and thats all someone can get, an opportunity. Since then this kind of attention to making sure to pay attention to how things are done and doing them the “right way” has carried on to the way that I approach tasks today. Going into spring, I was confident in my athletic abilities and was on the “high” of winning a championship. ”At UCLA during holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, my wife Nell, and I would invite them for dinner when they could not make it home to be with their immediate families” (Wooden,p.84). This was the same way with my baseball coach, Coach Marlow. He did extra things to help kids succeed and treated his players as if they were his own kids. He would buy kids lunches if they didn’t have money, turn his classroom into a rec center bringing out nets for ping pong and show kids magic tricks. He made us feel like we had somewhere we could go and have fun and have someone we could trust. When it came to the baseball field he would do his best to make sure the team was successful by building batting cages on campus so we could have somewhere easily accessible to practice and would stay late if a player wanted to work on their technique or ask for tips on their game. He was very encouraging and even when we failed he would always say
Once I moved back to the United States I encountered new leaders. My tennis coach was not a particularly good leader and had bad ways of trying to motivate the team. His form of trying to motivate us was to talk about the skill of the other team and hope that we would work hard to rise to their level. This did not work however, because most players just felt bad about themselves because the coach and the player had different goals. The coach had a “win at all costs” mentality while the player was looking to improve physical fitness and become healthier. This type of mentality almost got me to leave the team my senior year when in the winter before the tennis season I played ‘winter ball” for baseball and had contemplated leaving the tennis team for the baseball team. The coach had complained to the baseball coach and the baseball coach had told me that the tennis coach did not want me to leave. In the end, I had gone back to the tennis team because even though I had frustrations with the coach I wanted to have my final season with my team to help my team succeed.
Once I reached college there was a mix of good and bad leaders. I joined a community service fraternity called Alpha Phi Omega. Through my time here I was highly involved and was in positions that had good and bad leaders. Some of the presidents I worked under really focused on the team and how the team would succeed and what they can do to help with that. Other presidents had their own agenda and tried to push others who were in positions that created events to fulfill the agenda that they wanted. The ones that focused on the team had little drama in their term while those who pushed their own agendas had people always talking behind their backs because of their dissatisfaction with the job that they were doing.
All of these experiences caused me to realize this one fact that when you focus on your own self-interest you will not be an effective leader but when you look for the success of the team everything can be achieved. The people I classified as good leaders were leaders who were willing to sacrifice their own time, energy and sometimes even money to be able to provide tools to help the team succeed. While the people who were considered bad leaders were people looking for glory for themselves at the expense of the team. Those leaders who took the extra time and effort will always be in my memory which allowed me to gain the skills and personal growth that I have today.

Comments: The article gives insight about the landscape of sports marketing and the difference between marketing in sports and marketing products. The article also covers marketing strategies in sports. The conclusion is that sports marketing tactics cause a deep connection to the brand that other companies can adopt.
Comments: The article gives great information of sports fans and breaks down the demographics. From these demographics it breaks down their spending habits. This is useful information because I will be able to analyze which leagues are succesful at gaining customers to produce revenue which can focus which sports have the most effective marketing campaigns.
Comments: This book talks about the importance of relationship marketing and how it is more important know because sports leagues are looking to expand outside their home countries. Comments:  This illustrates the difference between marketing tactics in women’s sports and men’s sports because of the difference of the fans who attend. The study found that men and women cared for success the most, but women’s sports have a family environment that men’s sports do not have. This is important to understand as a marketer because knowing the difference between those who watch men and women’s sports can help develop effective marketing plans.

Comments: This article talks about the marketing tactics used when marketing high school sports and why each tactic is successful. This is important because when entering new markets high schoolers are the best to target because they are young, and children will look up to high schoolers as their idols because they are someone in their community who is a role model to them.

`           The readings highly relate to my past present and future and help me gain a deep insight on ways I could have handled previous situations and how I can handle them now if they ever come up again.  The readings that had to do with the operations of sports management could relate to my past of management, marketing, finance, and economics because I was able to review upon what I had learned in my undergraduate degree because of my background in marketing. The readings that had to do with leadership qualities in Wooden on Leadership tied to my present because it helped describe how I am approaching the growth of my career in sports. Next, the section talking about the process of success in the Wooden book can help me to understand the struggles I will endure in the future and ways that I can overcome these future struggles Finally, the law and history sections of the Foundations in Sports Maagment help me  understand the rules involved in the industry as well as the foundations of the industry to help me become successful in the future .
The readings of the Foundations of Sports Management  relate closely to my past. The concepts in the management, marketing, finance and economics sections were all things I could relate to because of my undergraduate background in marketing. During my undergraduate, I was able to learn concepts that the book covered such as the 4 P’s of product, price, placement, and promotion as well as the steps of managing successful projects. While in college I was able to use these concepts to help completed different projects in class, to help my organization grow, and develop marketing plans for competitions to present to companies. While doing marketing projects the 4 P’s were always in mind when developing plans for organizations and I was able to put this into action when I did research for Amerisol ( wholesale food distributor) as well as multiple projects on the sports industry. One of these projects was on my schools Cal State LA NIght. This event was in coordination with the Dodgers and the Alumni Association at my school and we did research on the success of the event. Our findings showed that there was no interest among students and that there was little promotion of the event. In order to coordinate the research to come to this conclusion, we had to understand the 4 Ps. The Alumni Association was getting it all wrong when reaching out to students. Most students didn’t even know about the event despite being baseball fans and the price was too high for the students who had to worry about student loans and provided recommendations for the organizations. The readings were able to be tied to my past of working in my non-profit organization because I was able to use the same management concepts learned in my undergraduate as well as reviewed in the reading to make an assessment on how an event was doing and how it could be improved. My past was also able to be related to the readings of John Wooden. This was the most prominent when he was talking about how “when a decision is made it must be accepted by the team or they must be encouraged to find another team” (p.29). While in leadership roles I was able to experience this kind of decision of people not accepting leaderships decisions among the people who I was leading and in that situation I was trying to keep them around when I should have encouraged them to look somewhere else to use their efforts. This lead to a bunch of problems in the organization and situations that gave me as well as others in charge of more stress than there needed to be.
The readings were also able to be tied to my present. Some of the qualities that John Wooden had talked about is tied to my present. The reason for this is when Wooden talks about intentness I can relate to that currently. Right now my goals are clear and set and every day I am working with intentness. I am constantly looking for job opportunities and am looking at gathering all the information that I need in the sports industry.  Another trait that Wooden talks about that are relevant to me right now is alertness. I am currently being surrounded in the sports industry with internships and classes and strive to produce a sense of alertness to be able to get the most out of these experiences. Other traits Wooden talks about that are relevant right now to me is competitive greatness. Right now with classes and my internship, I am preparing. I am preparing by understanding the sports industry and studying up on it so when the time comes I am going to be ready to use that information to perform at the highest level.
The readings also help me to prepare for the future. With all the preparation that I am doing now, I will be able to call upon this information and experiences when I need it on a big project or a tense situation that requires an immediate decision. One of the rules to lead by that Wooden talked about was “Love the struggle”(p.58) and this is going to be an important thing to remember as my journey in the sports industry continues. There will be ups and downs in my journey and I have to understand that as well as understand that I will have to do things that I don’t want to do in the beginning. Remember that I have to love the struggle will help me get through the trials and tribulations of the future. Another word of wisdom that Wooden has spoken upon me that will help the future is to not let anyone define my success. Most of the other students that I have met seem to be way ahead of me when it comes to where they are in moving up in the sports industry. I need to remember that I am still young and will have time to achieve more in the sports industry. Other things that were useful to my future is the readings in Foundations in Sports Managment. The history that the book provided about how sports became a business is a very useful tool for the future. If I know the history of how sports became a business then I can understand more about the deep roots of the culture of sports which can help me be successful in operating in the current landscape of sports. Other useful information that the book gave me was highlighting current issues in the sports industry. These issues are diversity in the workforce and international sport management. Every sport is looking to expand its sport and tap into untapped markets. With this expansion so comes diversity in people. Understanding this concept that as you expand your workforce will become more diverse is an important thing to be aware of so as a manager I can take the appropriate precautions and implement the right protocols in order to develop and maintain a healthy and thriving work environment. The final topic that will be essential to my future in sports is the law section. This section will be important because as I continue my journey in the sports industry I will take more and more responsibilities, and as this happens more rules being aware of these rules will become essential to my success. Understanding fiduciary duties  and agency laws will become crucial to my growth because of, no matter if I am on the agency side or on the front office side of the business I will need to know these procedures to treat my client accordingly or to understand the duties that the person I am negotiating with is in charge of.
These readings were all very important to reflect upon my past, understanding my present and planning for my future. The marketing and management concepts already learned to allow me to understand my knowledge of the skills needed in the industry and how I can improve those skills in the present and future. The leadership concepts in the Wooden book are important to my present because I need to learn how to use these keys to develop myself into the leader I am growing to be by developing a plan and the qualities needed to become a better leader in the future. The readings also relate to my future because it helps me understand what more I need to learn about to help me understand the industry and how to thrive in my career in sports. These readings help shape my current vision of the industry and what to expect when growing in the future. These readings are tied to my entire journey, culminating my past, present and future.

In Bradberry and Greaves (2009) it states, “Getting to know yourself inside and out is a continuous journey of peeling back the layers of the onion of becoming more and more comfortable with what is in the middle-the true essence of you” (p.61). The authors talk about this because in order to be a leader of others you need to lead yourself and in order to lead yourself you must understand yourself. Life is a continuous journey full of highs and lows that help shape an individual's life and this shaping of your life will determine who you become and how you lead others. Ever since I was a young child, I have been an outsider; my cousins are over 10 years older than me or all girls, and in school, nobody from the same place, or I was the only one who spent time in another country. I was never able to seem to connect with anyone in my life because our lives were nothing similar. It all starts as I was born on August 24, 1997, in Guam. I was born with medical problems (Meconium aspiration) and had to be medically evacuated to Okinawa, Japan. At the age of two, my parents were reassigned to San Diego. I lived there until middle school where we moved to Italy. This started as a low point because I was leaving friends I had made in elementary school and I was afraid I wouldn’t meet anyone. I had pleaded to my parents not to leave but I had no choice, we had to leave. This low point leads to a high point as I started joining sports teams and made new friends.
Playing sports allowed me to travel all over Europe and meet people all over the world. The most memorable moment was when I had gone to the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Junior League Championship. During this time, I was able to meet up with an old friend from the previous year who won the Italian Championship and meet new people from South Africa. This was the first time that I had seen how global sports was and felt like a superstar because we would travel around for games and some of my older teammates were interviewed to be featured on the Armed Forces Network (AFN). These high points continued through my time in Europe, achieving European Championships and making new connections with people from all over the world. This high came to a low when I moved back to America. When I got back all my old friends had changed, I felt as though my time had disconnected me from the things that we had in common and we grew apart. During this time, I didn’t really hang out with anyone and often ate my lunch alone.  After finishing my lunch, I would just walk around the school and think. This was maybe the lowest point of my life but in this time of thinking, I was able to build a goal for myself, to get into the sports industry.
To get away from this environment that I had dreaded and felt so disconnected from I went to undergrad at Cal State LA. Since I knew what I wanted to do I knew that I wanted to live in Los Angeles which is one of the largest sports markets in the world. This goal and new start lead me to a high point which drove me through my time in college. The goal of getting to my dream of working in sport pushed me to do a lot of things that I had not done in high school, to lean in to discomfort. This is reflected in Bradberry and Greaves (2009) “Rather than avoiding a feeling, your goal should be to move toward the emotion, into it, and eventually through it” (p.68). Most people tend to avoid their feelings when stressed and don’t overcome it and this will not help you in your leadership. In order to not have your emotions affect your leadership, you must embrace it and overcome it. Once you accept your emotions for what they are (a part of you), you will be able to understand yourself and the most effective way for you to lead. In college I joined an organization on campus (Alpha Phi Omega) and took on leadership positions, I participated more in class and school competitions and also applied to the University of San Francisco to pursue the dream even further. This was a very productive time for me, I was growing emotionally as well as growing my knowledge to be more confident and make more informed decisions. During my time I tried taking on big projects and was not discouraged in trying to produce new ones despite having most members who were not interested in working harder to better the organization. Luckily, I was able to find a group of members who did want things to be better and together we strived to make a healthier organization. Projects that we were able to be successful in was the Forget-Us-Not Benefit Concert, various service projects, as well as developing relationships between new non-profit organizations as well as other organizations on campus. While in these positions I was also in charge of helping make decisions to settle disputes between members as well as between the organization and the school. These times of making decisions showed how I reacted to a stressful situation. Most times in making decisions of punishment I would be on the harsh side and want them to receive the full consequences. Those who wanted to have lower punishments I couldn’t understand why so I went back to my method of thinking. To find this answer I was looking for what (Bradberry and Greaves (2009) is talking about “Knowing why your buttons are what they are opens doors to managing reactions to your triggers”( p.74). It is important to know what your triggers are so you can learn to control them. If your trigger influences your decisions, then you will not think clearly and make a decision that you will regret in the future. In order to combat this, I would walk around campus and would try and see why they thought that way and why this way of thinking made me mad. After a long time of thinking and walking, I understood that my way of thinking may come from my military background which was those who were punished in school or parents by commanding officers was severe. Kids who messed up by drinking or smoking weed were deported back to the United States and those in the military were suspended from their jobs or kicked out of the military. These punishments became the basis for what I feel is an acceptable punishment. So not only was I shaped to think that those who were punished should be punished severely, but the reason for this punishment was justified because it would get them to get away from the bad influences that were around them. When I made decisions on punishment, I thought the same, “We are punishing them to help them”. I began to see the other side that punishing them was hurting their future and diminishing their confidence in the organization. As I grew older, I also made some of these same decisions that I had previously been opposed to, so I understood why these people made decisions that would get them in trouble.
The highs and lows of my life have shaped the person that I am today and how I handle situations. The lows have developed struggles for me to overcome and test my reaction to pressure to set up my highs in life when I overcome these struggles. Now I react in two ways when I am faced with a situation that requires an action. Most times I am quiet and am observing the environment around me because of my high school experience. I didn’t have anyone to be around and talk to, so I just observed the people around them and studied their interactions with others to gauge an environment. While I was in college, I learned how to use my voice and speak up through leadership positions. I like to have all the information possible to make a good decision which I gather from observing the environment and the people around me. When I gather this information, I speak up about my findings and what I think is the best decision. I am very adamant about my opinion am willing to fight for the conclusion that I have found. This approach to solving problems is from my experience in leadership and with the military. The military caused me to be quiet because those who were in charge were the only ones that could speak. This gave me no choice but to observe. This gave me no choice but to gather information and now I use this information to make decisions with my new-found confidence in my ability to speak up. This has proved to be effective because I study all the factors through observation and am now confident enough to speak up about my conclusions. My highs and lows have made me into the person I am today, all the good and bad I have learned to embrace them all.
Learning to embrace who I am can help me a lot in the future. Since I know it takes time for me to make decisions because I require a lot of information to make decisions and consider a lot of factors.  I also need to account for the time of gathering information, this makes my decision-making process take more time so if a project needs to have a quick decision then I need to develop a new strategy of decision making. Overall, I tend to make decisions of analytical thought as opposed to empathetic thought and am growing to learn that in some cases it may be better to put yourself in other people's shoes before deciding.

Bucs continue to grow women of red female fan event. (2019, August 2,). American City Business Journals, Retrieved from https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2019/08/02/Bucs.aspx
Abstracted by Aaron Rodriguez
The article highlight the Bucs Women of Red event which is an open event to women to observe the Bucs training camp. The event increased attendance from 1,000 to 1,500 and they were able to participate in running recieving routes, kicking field goals as well as other training camp activities.
Comments: This article highlights the growing interest of NFL teams to include women in the league. The increase in attendance shows that women are interested so if teams provide the event then women will participate. This can be beneficial to other teams throughout the league as well as the NFL itself because they are aware of the growing interest women have in the sport.

HOF game features crowd of 20,000, pass interference challenge. (2019, August 2,). Retrieved from https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2019/08/02/HOF-Game.aspx
The article talks about the recent HOF game and how coaches now have the ability to challenge pass interference calls. Thr call on the field was upheld despite being challenged.
Comments: This article shows the response the NFL has to the Saints vs Rams last minute non-call. This is an effective way of addressing the issue to make sure that the right call is made without affecting the flow of the game too much by restricting coaches challenges to before the two minute warning.

This article reports upon the lack of diversity within the head coaching positions and how despit having qualifications that may be comparable to other candidates and possibly exceeding other candidates they are not even getting interviews. Over the past two seasons only 2 of 15 of the head coaching positions were filled by people of color.
Comments This speaks upon the state of the NFL and how they are still not hiring minorities despite them being qualified for head coaching positions. This may also speak to hiring processes through all positions and their lack of diversity. In the future the league should look into improving diversity because this will help bring new and fresh ideas to the game of football.

Stern, A. (2019, August 2,). NBA 2K league signing bud light as official beer sponsor. Retrieved from https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Closing-Bell/2019/08/02/NBA-2k.aspx
This article features the NBA 2K league and the growth of the league. The growth is catching the eye of large companies such as AT&T, Dell, Facebook and recently Anhueser-Busch. The NBA 2K league tournament will feature league players as well as influencers in a pro-am setting
Comments: This important for the world of sports because this shows the influence that eSports is having on the industry and large companies are taking notice upon the oppurtunities that are becoming apparent to both the sport and sponsors. The world of sports is developing to become more digital and sports that are live action will have to look into utilizing a multitude of technologies to compete with emerging eSport leagues.

This study investigates the influence that sports organizing bodies have on sports mega-events and sports mega-event sponsors. The study showed that sport mega-event organizers had a direct influence on the mega-event influence. However, there is little correlation between organizing bodies and sports mega-event sponsors.

Comments: This study is important because, as large sporting mega-events continue to be conducted the organizing bodies must not only focus on the execution of the event but on the way that the organizing body is perceived because of the direct correlation of the event success and perception of the organizing bodies. This also is important to sponsors of mega-events because they are aware that there is little correlation with the governing bodies and their own images. Moving forward large companies can be reassured that their sponsorships of large events will not affect their companies image and ultimately their profit.

Comments:  This article talks sbout the difference between marketing tactics in women’s sports and men’s sports because of the difference of the fans who attend. The study found that men and women’s cared for success the most but women’s sports have a family enviorment that men’s sports do not have. This is important to understand as a marketer because knowing the difference between those who watch men and womens sports can help develop effective marketing plans.

This is important because when entering neew markets high schoolers are the best to target because they are young and children will look up to high schoolers as their idols because they are someone in their community who is a role model to them.
