Where I’m From

I am from hours on a court,
from fast running and hard hitting
I am from where city and paradise collide
(Soothing sounds, fast paced and full of excitement)
I am from the smell of the forest,
And the fire of the Volcano
Whose fresh smell calms the heat of the molten rocks

I’m from Christmas dinners and love of music
from Glenn and Chris and Che
I’m from the distinguished and hard workers

From “ When I was in the Philippines” and “ Your so lucky for the food we have”
If from Thou shall not sin
Whose words dwell in my mind constantly
And the Lords prayer which is heard every week

I’m from Frank and Chris’ Branch
Fried lumpia and juicy barbeque
From the late nights spent with cousins while parents were out

Giving me happiness and freedom from watchful eyes
From the many albums walls and tables filled with photos
Documenting every detail of one child’s life
and showing memories of loved ones that are lost
a record of those living and those who have passed

I am from those moments—
Snapped before I budded—
Leaf-fall from the family tree
