Character Write Up
In our project the character I decided to portray was Nick Caraway. Nick is an essential character to the book because he portrays an unbiased opinion about everyone. The traits he possesses are quiet and observant. He seems to be a spectator to the lives of the people in the book. I hoped to portray these characteristics when I was Nick in the video.
In the video I made some choices on how to portray the role of Nick. I decided to be more of a listener in my role. I did this because in the book he is the narrator and is unbiased. He bases his judgment of people base on actions and not on what others have said about them. The thing that motivated me in the text to do the things I did was how Nick was told of in the story. He is a person who excellently portrays the themes of the novel.

He portrays themes of the novel and is important because he doesn’t know anyone in the book in the beginning so he has a fresh understanding of the characters in the book. He evaluates the personalities of the other character based on how they show themselves and not on their history because with everyone he has no history with them. Fitzgerald uses Nick to show how society should be. He thinks that people in society should be like Nick. Nick doesn’t show off his wealth and doesn’t judge people before knowing them. Fitzgerald is saying that society is not like Nick and bases their judgments on wealth and how they got their wealth. Nick doesn’t care about how people got their money but on who they are. His character is shown greatly in his last name Caraway. The author chooses this last name to further show how Nick is not judgmental. He throws all the cares and judgments of the other people about the person he is meeting away and bases his evaluation of this person on his own experiences. In today’s society people are trying to be more like Nick. We try and judge people based on who they are rather than on what they have or their social status. Overall Nick is the person who the people in the book and in today’s society we strive to be.
