Hydrogen
Hydrogen is the lightest element it takes up about 90% of the earth’s weight. Hydrogen as water is essential to life. Hydrogen was used in air balloons but it isn’t today because it is too flammable. It was named by Lavoisier. Production of hydrogen in the U.S. alone is 3 billion cubic feet per year. This is created by steam on heated carbon, decomposition of certain hydrocarbons with heat, reaction of sodium or hydroxide on aluminum. Hydrogen is colorless, odorless and nonmetallic. The most common isotope of hydrogen is protium. The ground state energy level of the electrons is 13.6 eV. The melting point of hydrogen is – 259.2°C and the boiling point is - 252.8 °C. Many reactions t hydrogen cause a fire or explosion. Hydrogen creates 0.15% of the earths crust. Its atomic weight is 1.00794and its density is 0.00008988. Hydrogen combined with nitrogen creates ammonia.Hydrogens position on the periodic table is 1. Hydrogen is colorless, highly flammable and light.
